Summary

In the evening, protesters gathered at Elizabeth Caruthers Park near the ICE facility for the nightly demonstration. Tonight’s demonstration comes on the back of the news that 545 children have been detained by ICE and cannot be reunited with their parents because they (their parents) have been lost. Accordingly, the number 545 was written on walls around the area of the ICE facility during the demonstration.

Around 8:45 pm, about 100 protesters arrived at the ICE facility, and were mostly standing around and chanting until an unlawful assembly was declared by Homeland Security (DHS) agents at 9:35 pm. What followed was DHS officers pushing protesters out of the area using force and indiscriminately and brutally arresting protesters for the next few hours. An ambulance was also seen pulling into the facility around midnight, but leaves later without a passenger. There are some reports that another ambulance arrived later in the night, but that one didn’t leave empty-handed. By around 1:15 pm, with most of the protesters seemingly leaving the area when the first ambulance left, numbers dwindled and the night ended.

About ~25 people are gathered in the grass, some making signs to replace ones that were torn down and destroyed near the ICE facility in South Portland on Sunday.

A medic tent is set up in the park offering free supplies including earplugs, face masks, bottled water and snacks. A table nearby was piled with stacks of free abolitionist literature, but was disassembled and put away after a light rain began to fall.

Recently some back the blue activists came down and ripped several student made BLM signs off of the fence of their school. Earlier today those students replaced their signs.

Around 8:40 pm, protesters depart from the park.

The crowd, which has grown to ~50 people, has left Elizabeth Caruthers Park and begun marching south on the sidewalk lining SW Bond Ave. toward the ICE facility, chanting “how do you spell ‘nazi?’ ‘D-H-S!’ How do you spell ‘rapists?’ ‘D-H-S!’ How do you spell “killers?’ ‘D-H-S!’”

While marching along the sidewalk, several eggs were thrown from an apartment complex window overhead, splattering on the ground. “Put on your helmets, everybody!” a person shouted.

Upon arriving at the ICE facility on SW Moody Ave. and Bancroft St., a voice came over a loudspeaker warning the crowd to stay on the sidewalk and to not engage in criminal activity. Several people began chanting “fuck you, roof cop!”
