Protests for June 30

Summary

Tonight’s protest and march at Peninsula Park started with speeches from Rabbi Ariel Stone and other community members on topics spanning Palestinian solidarity, police brutality, and other intersectional aspects of the BLM movement. At 8 PM protesters marched from the park to the Portland Police Association headquarters. Tonight the PPB contract expires, and it is scheduled to be extended by city council on Wednesday. At the PPA building, a crowd of police officers including Oregon State Police guarded the building perimeter.

Police declared an “unlawful assembly” not long after protesters arrived there, deploying riot munitions. The group was pushed a distance through the neighborhood, with several arrests. At 10:14 PM the police declared the gathering a “riot” and began tear gassing protesters and the surrounding neighborhood. There were repeated announcements for the protest to move toward Albina St, but on arrival a large number of police were there and began arresting them. Multiple reporters are included in those arrests.

A smaller group of around 50-60 people rallied at the Justice Center tonight, tapering off after 1 AM.

Summary

Sunday was a relatively quiet night at the Justice Center, with approximately 150-200 protesters gathering to speak and march together. Around 10:30 PM, a car drove through a group near the elk statue, in an apparent attack. Fortunately there were no serious injuries reported. No police were seen throughout the night, and there was no attempt to enforce a midnight park closure.

Protests for June 27

Summary

Saturday afternoon, PDX Stripper Strike led a march across the Hawthorne Bridge, ending with dancing at Waterfront Park. Along the way, they stopped outside the Golden Dragon strip club to speak about their demands and the harm Black dancers have experienced.

Protesters gathered outside the Justice Center at dusk, building a barricade across SW 3rd and Main St. Around 10:30 PM, the police declared it an unlawful assembly and began shooting tear gas and impact munitions. People with ties to local White supremacist organizations spent much of the day sharing violent threats against BLM protestors on social media. When they attempted to attack protestors around 11:30, the agitators were pushed away from protestors and entered a 7-Eleven. These agitators were escorted away from the area by police.

Police continued to fire gas and other munitions at groups of protesters for the next few hours. At least one significant injury was reported.

Protests for June 26

Summary

Friday morning, Don’t Shoot PDX presented their report, “Riot Control Agents: Systemic Reassessment of Adverse effects on Health, Mental Stability, and Social Inequities“. That evening, a new agreement was filed on their temporary restraining order against the city, further restricting the use of crowd control munitions until July 24.

At a press conference, Police Chief Lovell claimed that the Thursday night protesters at the North Precinct nailed doors shut, barricading people inside, while a fire was started outside the building. This claim is not backed up by reports from protesters or press who were there.

The scheduled Abolish ICE protest march led people to a rally with speeches in Terry Schrunk Plaza, a block from the Justice Center. About 500 attended.

Protesters gathered at the Justice Center, forming groups in the nearby park and streets surrounding the building throughout the evening. Police sporadically emerged from the building to shoot at them. One protester left by ambulance after being struck. Another was taken to the hospital for care after a bb from one of these shots lodged in their eye cavity.

Early in the morning, police attempted to break up the gathering, chasing and attacking protesters.

Protests for June 25

Summary

Groups of protesters gathered at the Justice Center and Fernhill Park on the night of June 25. The latter event marched to the North Precinct and barricaded off an area of the street. After one of the barricades was set on fire, police swarmed the area with tear gas and impact munitions. Police made statements afterward that protesters had shut them in the building then attempted to set it on fire, which is not backed up by any reporters who were there.

At the Justice Center, protesters held a candlelight vigil and formed a protected fence area in front of the building.
